Three weeks ago, I received an email from a 4th Grade teacher at Martin Technology Academy, Ms. Becca Thompson, asking if FAAP could visit her class.
One of her students, a very eloquent young man, had penned a 'persuasive writing' piece in which he made an empassioned plea for a therapy dog to visit the classroom.
Could we please help?
Well, if you know our amazing Community Queens, you will know that they right away said, "Let's make his dream come true ASAP!"
And so it was that on Friday, Jennifer Calderhead, Cindy Vaughn, and Amy Seabolt Combs made their way to the school with two very eager therapy dogs, Lizzo and Otis Redding, to make everyone's day.
Lizzo was her normal, kind, approachable self, and Otis... Well, let's just say that he turned it on with a full-on charm offensive that brought tears to everyone's eyes.
He wriggled, he giggled, he smooched, and he cuddled... I think he might have even done a moonwalk?🤣
Such a celebrity!
Lizzo was the perfect, calming, and welcoming therapy dog, gently greeting all of the children with a smile and soft eyes. Her trademark 'gift' of settling down on a mat in the middle of a room full of children, allowing them to approach her, love on her, and yes, even bestow a kiss, was very gratefully received.
These two dogs interact with their audience very differently, but together they provide the perfect, fear-free therapy dog combo, an all-encompassing experience for children that ticks every box.
Each child was presented with an awesome "Friends of Frannie" Gift Bag, which included a wonderful new Frannie Soft Toy, plus stickers and postcards courtesy of the Lindsay Boomershine Robertson Scholarship. I think the children thought it was Christmas come early!
This visit was all about focusing on the children, meeting them where they are, interacting with them on a close and personal level, and, of course, making a young man's wish come true.
Take a look at these photos, and you will see it was very much 'mission accomplished.'
Thank you so much to Dr. Baker's System Saver for sponsoring our community outreach and for keeping our seniors in tip-top condition so that they can go and spread love everywhere they go!
